Hello net heads:
Let me first say that I am coating my butt (sorry about the 4
letter word) with asbestos in preparation for the flames that i
usually receive when I add my two cents on this topic. While as
recently pointed out it may not be such a great idea to attempt
to format HD as DD because of the oxide differences - coercivity
arguements aside (I am sure some-one will post some flame about
'how many oersteds this or that mag. oxide on this or that brand
HD has') DD discs can be formatted as HD fairly reliably. I have
been doing so on my PS-2 (sorry for the dirty word) for at the
very least 5 years (DOS on the PS-2 formats all discs hole
present or not as 1.4) and on my LC (with the aid of a store
bought 'Disc Hole Punch') for 2 years with out any notable
problems. While it hasn't save me a "Bazillion" dollars, it has
saved enough for a couple of cases of Sam Adams.

Subject: 3d Buttons (Greg's Buttons vs. NewLook)
A recent post on the info-mac-digest says (I paraphrase):
New Look may not have as many feature as Greg's Buttons
but it's much more stable.
Somehow I do not believe in the validity of such a statement
about a program (New Look) that has released three separate
versions (original + 2 bug fixes) within one month. Also,
in the documentation, the author of New Look lists about a
half dozen beta testers. Greg's Buttons 2.4, which was
released earlier this week, is the most stable version yet,
and it was beta tested by over 100 registered users for a
period of four weeks.
Yes, Greg's Buttons does conflict with a number of applications.
In most of these cases, it is NOT the fault of Greg's Buttons,
but rather the fault of an application that does not follow the
guidelines set down in Inside Macintosh. If you encounter any
of these problems, just turn off the options one-by-one until
you find the offending feature, and then all should be well.
I should also note that since I released Greg's Button 2.0 in
September, I have only had ONE bug report about the buttons
themselves. So, if you are only interested in 3d color buttons,
Greg's Buttons is one of the most stable control panels around.
Finally, anybody interested in enhancing the user interface on
a color Mac should download ALL the relevant programs (New Look,
Greg's Buttons, DoubleScroll, etc.) and try them out. Don't
judge a program by the hype; judge it based on what it does and
how well it works on YOUR system.
Thank you for enduring my flame.

My problem is, I don't know beans about Banyan-Vines and I have been unable
to locate any literature about it. The guy in our engineering department

Does anybody know if Banyan-Vines is compatible with anything else and do
you need any special software? Is there a MAC user out there who is

Hi all,
Just saw the new Centris 610 at the AppleCenter in Perth (its Feb 10 already
in
this part of the world) and played around with it a little. Didn't have much
time to examine the machine in detail, the one thing I did surprised me
considerably... when Shutdown is selected from Finder, the screen turns black
and the old dialog box with 'You may now switch off your Macintosh safely'
with a 'Restart' button on the right appears. A small thing perhaps, but it
struck me as being positively archaic in such a businesslike machine.

This would be fine, except for one small thing: Motorola is not
using failed '040s as LC040s. The LC040 is a totally redesigned chip
that was buit from the ground up withouth the FPU hardware. It's not
disabled, it's not failed, it just isn't there. This is the main reason
why the chip costs so much less, and why it has a smaller overall die
size than the full '040. Of course the good thing is that Motorolo
mounted these chips on the same pin set that the full '040 uses which
allows you to just pop out an LC040 and pop in a full '040 and have all
of the FPU stuff with no hassles. This is what the "upgrade" to full
'040 for the Centris 610 and the 4/80 Centris 650 is.

Troy
In an attempt to move out of the "stone age" of DOS and into the
Renaissance of MacintUsh computing, I began playing with the mighty Mac.
My superiors here at HRED Field Element have even gone so far as to attempt
the creation of data bases using such wonders as File Maker Pro version
1.0V2.
We've even gone so far as to take the old pile of newspapers, sales coupons,
circulars and other superfluous material that we didn't want blowing around
the office out from under the machine. Yet, we have found that our progress
out of the Dark Ages of Dos is being hampered by one small problem.
One day my superior (Mr. Robert Spine) was diligently working at
creating a Data Base for our office when to his dismay, he found that the
letter "x" would not type on the screen. It seems that in the File Maker Pro
application (Version 1.0v2) the small letter x does not type on the screen.
Try as you might, it will not show. Instead you can type a capital X, but
this tends to spoil the asthetics of the document. Such words as eXcuse,
eXtend, eXigence, eXenterate and eXhaust as eXempli gratia tend to ruin the
look and flow of a written statement. So the question remains; why is this
so. Until an answer is found I suppose we must limp on with our broken
macintUsh toy, forward out of the medieval realm of DOS into the "New Age"
of Mac. Either this or just unplug it and put it back on top of those old
newspapers I've been meaning to tie up.
Joe.

I've used LocalTalk connectors and a couple of ethernet cards from FOCUS,

small numbers of these devices over only a couple of months,
so far we've been pretty happy. Their prices are great. For example their
LocalTalk connectors are 10 for $99.99. Educational discount price is even
less.
OK, so the question is, does anyone have any experience with
FOCUS's LocalTalk star controller? It has 16 ports, is called the
TurboStar and only costs $449.99. Educational
discount is $399.99. If anyone does have experience with it, I'd be

Subject: Font Folder, 7.1, system heap?
While investigating another problem, I noticed something that puzzled me.
If I create a document with a sample of all the fonts in my system, the
system grabs up gobs of RAM. When the document is closed and I quit the
application, the swollen heap remains.
Circumstances: I'm running 7.1 on a Classic II and an SE (same behavior on
both, with two different word processors). I have 28 TrueType fonts in the
Fonts folder, and no other fonts (other than the handful in the System file
itself) or font utilities. I'm also running Disinfectant, DeskWriter
background printing, and Moire (latest versions in all cases). I have VM
turned on for the C2, but I doubt that's the problem, because the same
thing appears with VM turned off. And it appears with extensions disabled
as well, so I doubt it's any of those. All things considered, my system is
pretty much pared-down and clean.
The TrueType fonts are mostly Apple's own, though I have seven Bitstream TT
fonts as well.
Shouldn't the system free up RAM for fonts that aren't being used? Is it
the responsibility of the application to do something when it quits? Is it
possible I've found a subtle incompatibility between these two applications
and the 7.1 Fonts folder? Does Suitcase handle this situation better? Is it
possible that the system file on two different machines, installed on two
different dates from two different sets of original disks, could have been
corrupted in the same way by one of those extensions? Or is this a known
"feature" of System 7.1?

Subject: FPUs on new Centris machines
There has been a lot said over the past couple of weeks about the new Centris
machines, announced earlier in Tokyo, primarily about the '040LC's and their
lack of FPUs. I sent a posting which passed along the fact (as given by an
Apple system engineer) that the '040LC chips are not standard '040RC chips
with
'failed FPUs, but chips redesigned and manufactured without the FPUs by
Motorola.
The question remains, can we add FPUs to the Centris machines? Is there a
socket on the logic boards?
The answer is, no. In order to get the FPU, you've got to trade in your '040LC
for an '040RC -- yes, Apple will have a deal on the upgrade. Their pinout is
the same, and the only difference is that the RC has the massive heat sink on
it, where the LC has a much smaller heat sink. But you can pop out the LC and
pop in an RC.
The problem comes on the Centris 610 that because of the design of the
interior
of the machine, the heat sink for the '040RC runs into the space where you can
add in a single 7-inch NuBus card! So until someone comes out with a heat sink
for the '040RC that is shaped differently, you're not going to be able to put
an RC into a Centris 610 if you've got a NuBus card in it.
There is, however, room inside the Centris 650 for the RC to fit.

The Heap is the RAM put aside for the System files called System Heap
and the Stack is the Application Stack, which is RAM put aside for the
Application. The heap is set in the boot blocks and the original utilities
that fixed this problem took the approach of changing the boot blocks.
More recent utilities that fix this add some RAM to the heap at start up
time. HeapTool is a cdev that does this. You can change how much heap
is allocated through the control panel.
If you can't get HeapTool from Sumex, send me a note and I'll upload

Actually, most Macs running System 6.0.x with extra fonts, inits
and cdevs (which is most Macs I run into) have a heap problem. If
you are running System 6.0.x, you can go to the Apple menu and open
the first menu item "About the Finder". You will see a bar showing
how much RAM is being used. The bar has a black area and a gray area.
The gray area should be 25% of the total area. If this is the case, you
need HeapTool.

Correct, Multifinder and System 7 adjust HEAP dynamically. I have this
hypothesis that adding a little RAM to the heap with HeapTool would
not hurt and may even help even if you are using System 7. Anyone care

Nope. BTW- I think most people have problems with memory under
System 7 or Multifinder is because they do not allocate enough RAM
to the application. For example, if you have a 4 meg RAM machine using
system 6.0.x an no Multifinder, the whole 4 megs is available to the
application, while with multifinder or Sys 7, the RAM allocated to the
application is set by selecting the application's icon and then File-
Get Info. If this setting is 1700 K, that's all the application gets, even
if you have 4 meg available. If the app needs more RAM, you get an
error message which people think can only be solved by turning off
multifinder or not using System 7.
> Restart and rebuild the desktop (this worked
> for someone I helped last week who had the same problem).
Probably coincidental, but there is no reason not to try it.
> If you're running
> System 7, you can only unload the fonts and rebuild the desktop
While loading fonts is technically a cause of the problem, the real
problem is that your System is not adjusting adequately to the
fonts you have installed.

files to my macintosh are:
to connect to our mainframe using a 3270 emulation program (by IBM) on an IBM

to copy the files from the mainframe to the local hard-disk by using receive;
copy the files to a diskette from the IBM pc;
put the diskette into the Mac and use Apple file exchange to copy the files

use compact pro (which I have) to un-binhex the files.
These steps don't work (I have tried on two files, one big and one small)
what options must I give the receive command on the Ibm Pc (ASCII, CRLF) ?
what translator must I use with Apple File Exchange ?
I have tried the 4 combinations of flags for the receive command and I have

what am I doing wrong ??

Well, with the LC -> LC III upgrade announced, does anyone have any
comments on what would be the advantages and disadvantages of getting
Apple's upgrade versus a third party accelerator? The LC III upgrade
raises the memory limit to 32 Mb compared to the former 10 Mb, but that
doesn't seem to be a big problem for me. I'm looking more for a speed
upgrade, in particular speeding up a Personal Laserwriter LS (the

the LC to do all its processing).

Folks, my boss has sent me on what may well be a fruitless quest. He'd
like a color printer in the $1K price range that can be used by Mac's
and PC's at the same time. He came back from a demo drooling over the
HP DeskWriter 550C, not understanding that its cross platform support
is of the form "You can buy one for a Mac, or you can buy one for a PC,
but not both at the same time."
His request is further complicated by the fact that our DOS pukes (no
offense) aren't networked yet, and progress in that direction is not
real apparent. I envision some sort of printer that has a parallel port
to hook to his DOS box and a localtalk port -- and enough intelligence
to not get them confused.
Is there any such beast?

Subject: MathType problem
I'd like to hear from people who use Design Science's MathType 3.0 in
conjunction with Microsoft Word 5.0.
We get this weird problem on our machines: insert an equation in Word, and
type "l-subscript-zero" in the MathType window which appears (the l is the
lower-case curly L which is found in the MTExtra font; the zero is
Palatino 7 say). When you close the window which should cause the object
to be slotted into the Word document, MathType crashes with a division by
zero error (Type 4). Indeed, it seems that any MTExtra character followed
by a subscript (but not a superscript) causes this error.
There are plodding workarounds like manually typing in the combination of
characters that you want, but I'd like to know if it's just our setup that
needs fixing or if others can reproduce this crash. And if you have, do you
also have a cure? My guess is that it's related to the TrueType version of
MTExtra, but I don't have time to pursue this further right now...

Dear lovers of INITs and CDEVs,
While I was running my PB 170 off battery power today (at 16 MHz)
the delay between clicking on a menu and its actually being displayed was
quite noticeable (I'd say about 1/3 of a second or so); booting with
extensions off made it go away. The delay is also noticeable when running
at 25 MHz. Now Utilities seems to contribute to this to a great extent. I
also use MICN, TypeIt4Me... Have you noticed this too? I guess that having
the command-key equivalents is worth it.

Diagnosis: HDSC Setup contains a list of hard disk names
that it officially supports
Solution: prevent the name checking by using ResEdit to

Steps: (use a copy of HDSC Setup!!!)
1. Start ResEdit and open the copy of HDSC Setup
2. Open the Code Resource named "%A5Init"
3. Search in the ASCII section for the string "8 SEAGATE"
4. In the HEX-Section, change the code for the "8" in the

5. Save the changed version of HDSC Setup

Ahhh...but yes it does. It has "Classic" Color QuickDraw which has been

The color QuickDraw you're thinking of (that introduced with the Mac II)

Yes. However, remember that Gestalt was introduced in 6.0.4, so you'll
want to check for that. However, THINK C 5.0 contains glue code to make
Gestalt calls work in versions previous to 6.0.4. It just calls
pre-Gestalt traps for you and does the "translation."
Hope this helps.
